Pope Leo XIV was discharged from Rome’s Agostino Gemelli hospital on Saturday afternoon following lung surgery on Tuesday.
The announcement that Pope Leo would be released from hospital was made on Saturday morning by the Holy See Press Office.
In a statement, the Pope’s doctors said that he is fit to be discharged from the Gemelli Hospital.
Dr. Luigi Carbone and Professor Stefano Margaritora said the Pope underwent blood tests and a chest X-ray in the morning, which confirmed that his clinical condition allowed for him to leave hospital.
A separate statement from the Holy See Press Office also announced that on Sunday Pope Leo would lead the noonday Angelus prayer from the window of the Apostolic Palace.
Before returning to the Vatican, the Pope celebrated Mass in the room set aside for that purpose on the 10th floor of Gemelli Hospital.
This Sunday, October 18, Catholics around the world will celebrate the 100th anniversary of World Mission Sunday. This year’s theme, “One in Christ, United in Mission,” reminds us that through Baptism, each of us has a part in sharing the Gospel.
In his video message, Pope Leo XIV recalls how the prayers and generosity of the faithful sustained his own missionary work in Peru. Our prayers and contributions continue that work today, supporting mission dioceses and providing churches, formation, education, healthcare, and pastoral care in communities throughout the world.
Thank you for helping carry this century-long mission forward through your prayer and generosity.
